Many Christians don’t believe they can lead others in Bible study. This article is meant to encourage and challenge you to lead an effective Bible study for any age group.
If you are a Bible study teacher or leader, you have chosen to follow and obey what God has led you to do in His Word. Often, we shy away from leading Bible study, and we do it for several different reasons. Regardless of the reasons, there are some important things to consider before you decide you are not capable or equipped enough or you are not the Christian you should be and someone else should lead it.
Let’s look at a few Biblical truths then we will see if you should be teaching Bible study.
- The Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20 states all believers should disciple the world. The length of time you have been a believer (whether a year or less or more) does not factor into whether you obey this commission or not.
- Paul told Timothy (1 Timothy 4:12, who was called to ministry at a young age) do not let others discourage you because you are young. Whether new to teaching or leading, the same applies to you. You may think you need to have all the Biblical answers before you are qualified to lead Bible study. Timothy didn’t. Truth: you may never have all the answers, but you are capable of finding them. (God’s Word is exhaustive, meaning you will never be able to fully comprehend all that God is and all that He has said).
- Most Bible studies and lessons have done the studying for you because studying takes time and prayer. You may not have the time to study but you can follow a well-prepared lesson.
- The important parts of every Bible study or lesson should have these goals: read God’s Word, discuss God’s Word, examine certain parts of a verse, pray. The Holy Spirit will draw them.
- Good Bible studies and lessons not only teach the child or student, but they also teach the teacher as well.
- Hebrews 10:24-25. Luke 24:46-47. John 17:18. Teaching is a calling from God but leading, encouraging, witnessing and discipling is something we are all commissioned and commanded to do.
- Children’s Bible Teacher lessons contain a great deal of truth from God’s Word which anyone can share with other believers and students.
Once you decide to start leading others by using these lessons, (and other well-prepared lessons), you will learn much from God’s Word and find enjoyment in doing so.
